Welcome back to SRED.ca SR&ED’s SR&ED Academy; a hub where the intricate world of Scientific Research and Experimental Development (SR&ED) becomes clear and accessible. We’ve covered a lot of ground in our SR&ED Essentials course, and today, we’re venturing into a territory that might seem a bit daunting: audits, reviews, and appeals. But fear not! We’re here to shed light on these processes and equip you with the knowledge to navigate them confidently.

So, you’ve submitted your SR&ED claim – well done! Now, there’s a chance the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) might want to take a closer look. Think of it as their way of ensuring everyone’s playing by the rules and maximizing the program’s benefits.

• Audit Selection: The CRA uses a combination of risk assessment, random selection, and specific triggers to choose which claims to review. It’s a bit like a lottery, but with a purpose.
• Audit Process: If you get audited, the CRA will request additional documentation, conduct interviews, and possibly visit your workplace. It’s their way of gaining a deeper understanding of your SR&ED activities.
• Review Process: A review is generally less intensive than an audit. The CRA may simply require some further information or clarification on certain aspects of your claim.

While no one looks forward to an audit or review, being prepared can make a world of difference.

• Documentation is Your Best Friend: Maintain meticulous records of your SR&ED activities. This includes technical documentation, financial records, and any supporting evidence that showcases your eligible work.
• Double-Check, Then Triple-Check: Before submitting your claim, review it with a keen eye. Ensure everything aligns with the SR&ED program’s guidelines. A little extra effort now can save a lot of hassle later.
• Stay in the Loop: The SR&ED program can evolve, so stay informed about the latest rules and regulations. Knowledge is your shield against potential surprises.

If you disagree with the CRA’s decision on your claim, you have the right to speak up.

• Notice of Objection: This is your formal way of expressing your disagreement. Be sure to submit it within the specified timeframe and clearly articulate your reasons for objection.
• Review and Resolution: The CRA will reassess your claim in light of your objection. The goal is to reach a fair and mutually agreeable resolution.
• Dispute Resolution: If an agreement can’t be reached, there are other avenues to explore, like mediation or even litigation. But let’s hope it doesn’t come to that!
