DOCUMENTING YOUR WORK

Documentation That Protects Your Claim

Video 3: Documentation That Protects Your Claim

Learning Objective

By the end of this module, you will be able to identify, capture, and align the technical and financial documentation required to support an audit-ready SR&ED claim.

Supporting Documentation Matters!

If there’s one thing that can make or break your SR&ED claim, it’s documentation. The best technical work (and well-written technical report) in the world won’t stand up in front of CRA if you can’t back it up with solid records. On the flip side, strong supporting documentation doesn’t just protect your claim—it can actually reveal more eligible work than you realized.

Many companies are pleasantly surprised when they start tracking properly. Suddenly, those late-night problem-solving sessions, those prototype tweaks, and those extra experiments aren’t just “business as usual”—they’re SR&ED-eligible activities.

Good record-keeping also pays off in confidence.

When CRA calls, you won’t be scrambling through old files or trying to remember what happened months ago. You’ll be ready. You’ll know where the records are, how your team tracked their work, and you’ll feel comfortable walking CRA through the story of your project.

Think of documentation as your safety net and your amplifier: it catches you when you’re challenged, and it highlights the real depth of innovation happening in your business.

Action Steps

  • Let’s continue with a review of what type of documentation CRA expects, and how to set up your record-keeping systems.
